How to Use a Smith's Multi-Purpose Tool Sharpener

Lawnmower blades, limb primers and axes are only a few of the outdoor and garden tools that utilize a cutting blade. Metal blades are used to cut grass, weeds and brush in the lawn and landscape. Due to normal use, these blades become dull. Various means are available for honing or restoring the cutting edge of metal blades. The Smith's Multi-Purpose Tool Sharpener is designed to help with sharpening tasks. Featuring a protective grip, called the "Sharp Shield," to keep hands safe, the Smith's Sharpener is basic in design.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dirt and debris from the cutting edge of the metal blade. Use a rag and stiff-bristle brush to loosen and remove any debris prior to starting the sharpening process.

    • 2

Hold the Smith's Multi-Purpose Tool Sharpener by the Sharp Shield grip. Hold the top of the sharpener against the palm of your hand. Grip the groove around the edge of the sharpener with the tips of your fingers.

    • 3

Place the flat bottom of the sharpening tool against the cutting edge of the blade. Angle the sharpener to match the beveled edge of the cutting blade.

    • 4

Begin at one end of the blade. Move the Smith's sharpener along the entire length of the blade in one direction.

    • 5

Turn the blade over and repeat the process to sharpen the opposite side of the cutting edge. Continue to sharpen both sides of the cutting edge the same number of times until the edge is sharpened.
