Check the gas tank for fuel if the engine will not start. Remove the cap of the gas tank and look inside to make sure that it is filled to the top. Inspect the fuel for any signs of water and replace if necessary.
Turn the fuel valve switch to the "On" position if the engine will not start. The valve switch is located on the engine near the starter handle.
Turn the engine to the "On" position if the engine will not start.
Remove the spark plug from the engine with a socket wrench. Inspect the end for signs of rust or broken ceramic. Replace the plug if necessary.
Remove the screw holding the air filter in place if the engine will not start or there are fluctuations in power. Remove the filter cover and inspect the air filter. Replace the filter if it is dirty.
Check the oil level by pulling out the dipstick if the unit loses power while working. Fill with the oil recommended in your owner's manual.
Tighten all screws if the unit bounces or shakes while in use.
Inspect the V-belt that runs from the engine to the tines if the tines will not move when you press the trigger. Replace the belt if it is broken.
