How to Replace a Drive Belt on a Murray Riding Mower

Murray riding lawn mowers have a motion drive belt. The drive belt runs from the drive pulley at the front of the machine under the engine to the back of the machine. The belt turns the wheels of the unit. After several hours of use the drive belt may become brittle and require replacement. Replacing a drive belt can be done without professional help. Order belts from Murray to ensure that the belts fit correctly, preventing unnecessary wear to the pulleys.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the mower on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.

    • 2

Lift up the hood of the mower and disconnect the spark plug.

    • 3

Lower the mower deck to the lowest setting. Remove the pins holding the mower deck in place and slide it out from under the unit. Removal will depend on your Murray model, so read the owner's manual.

    • 4

Remove the nut from the middle of the drive pulley under the engine, using a socket wrench. The drive pulley holds the belt in place.

    • 5

Loosen the belt guides, using a wrench. Pull the belt off the drive pulley.

    • 6

Slide the new belt between the stack pulley and the belt guides. Use the same orientation for the belt as it had previously.

    • 7

Wrap the end of the belt around the drive pulley and lift the drive pulley up into place.

    • 8

Make sure you are lying on the ground and looking up at the belt from the front of the machine. From this vantage point, pull on the left end of the pulley and wrap it around the idler pulley.

    • 9

Tighten the drive pulley with a wrench. Replace the deck and test the unit.
