Scotts Weed & Feed Safety

Scotts Weed & Feed is an herbicide and fertilizer in one. It can save you time and energy by combining both products into a single application. The downside is that when herbicides and fertlizers are improperly used, they can cause harm to lawns, the environment, pets and humans. It is important to follow all product instructions carefully and know what to do in case you misuse the product.
  1. Lawn Safety

    • It is crucial to use Scotts Weed & Feed according to the directions in order to protect your lawn and yourself from harm. Apply Scotts Weed & Feed only twice per year, and avoid watering your lawn for at least two days after use. Avoid overapplying Scotts Weed & Feed as it can burn your grass. If you do apply too much, water your grass with 1 to 2 inches of water for several days to wash out the excess. Avoid applying Scotts Weed & Feed to ornamental flowers, shrubbery and vegetables as it will kill them. Carefully follow all other directions on the package.

    Environmental Safety

    • Scotts Weed & Feed should be applied no more than two times per year. If it is applied more than this, harmful runoff can affect local rivers, lakes and ponds. Because the product is part fertilizer, it can cause an excess of algae in ponds, which can kill native fish and plants.

    Safe Handling

    • Carefully read all safety instructions and warnings on the Scotts Weed & Feed label. Because the herbicides in Scotts Weed & Feed can cause skin and eye irritation, wear a long sleeved shirt, pants and protective gloves during application. Avoid leaving the product open in a place where children or animals could accidentally ingest it. Do not allow pets or children to use the lawn immediately after application. Wait until the granules have completely dissolved, usually after a hard rain.

    Storage Safety

    • Store Scotts Weed & Feed in its original packaging in a location that is not near animal feed or food intended for human or animal consumption. Store the product on a high shelf that children and animals cannot reach. Lock the storage area to prevent children or animals from ingesting the product.

    In Case of Misuse

    • If Scotts Weed & Feed gets in your eyes, flush them with water for fifteen minutes. If you experience skin irritation, wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water. If a child or pet ingests it, call 911 immediately and induce vomiting. If you or others experience vomiting or nausea, diarrhea, muscle twitches or weakness, an absence of reflexes, drops in blood pressure or urinary incontinence after handling Scotts Weed & Feed, call poison control or 911 immediately.
