Homelite Weedeater Won't Feed String

The line advancing system on a Homelite weedeater uses the force from the spinning head and a spring inside the head to push more line out. This tapping system allows the operator to feed more string out as needed. However, clogs, line jams and other issues in the advancing system can stop the string from feeding out.
  1. String Feeding Issues

    • The string inside the head is wrapped around a plastic spool. For the line advancing system to work properly, the string needs to be wrapped tight enough by coming loose and loose enough to keep from getting caught on the spool. When replacing the string, always wind the line according to the arrow direction on the spool. Wind the line in tight, even rows that don't overlap and crisscross each other. This will ensure the problem isn't with the string.

    Weed Jams

    • Weed and other tall grasses can get sucked up into the head during operation. If these grasses collect inside the head, they can clog the line advancing system, and the head will stop feeding string out. When this happens, the head may even stop spinning completely, or it may make louder than normal noises. Clean out the head every time you replace the string to prevent the weeds from building up and mow down tall grasses from the top down.

    Spool Issues

    • The spool must rotate smoothly with the head for the line advancing system to work properly. If the spool can't rotate or wobbles inside the head, the string will stop feeding out. These spools can crack or bend easily from tapping the head too hard against the ground. Only tap the head when the line gets low and don't over-tap the head. If the string stops feeding out, don't tap the head harder and harder. Stop the trimmer and check the line advancing system for problems.

    Spring Problems

    • The spring inside the head tends to pop out during string replacement. If this spring falls out, it must be installed properly before the filled spool is set on top. If the spring is installed improperly, the spring ends may not connect to the spool, which will stop the string. The spring ends may also get bent from excessive tapping of the head. Pull the spring out and check the ends and the spring's elasticity. Replace the spring if necessary.
