Park the 42-inch Troy-Bilt lawn tractor on a level surface. Push in the foot brake while engaging the parking brake. Move the clutch lever into the disengaged position.

Turn the key to the "Off" position and take the key out of the ignition. Unhook the spark plug wire and position it so it won't contact the spark plug during service.

Slide the deck under the mower, positioning the grass chute on the right-hand side of the mower. Install the spring onto the deck idler bracket. Install the power take off, or PTO, cable on the rear of the cutting deck, securing it with the hairpin clip.

Slide the deck slightly to the rear while guiding the hooks on the deck to the deck stabilizing rod on the mower. Move the deck lift lever into the lowest setting. Install the cotter pin securing the left side deck support rod to the deck lift arm. Install the hairpin on the right side deck support rod on the deck lift arm.

Install the deck belt into position on the mower's engine and idler pulleys. Insert the self-tapping screw into the belt keeper rod, securing it to the engine pulley. Raise the deck lift lever up to finish the installation.
