How to Remove the Deck of a Troy-Bilt Pony Lawn Mower

The mower deck on your Troy-Bilt Pony lawn tractor needs to be removed regularly for maintenance and cleaning. Removing and reinstalling the deck is standard operating procedure for Pony tractor owners, as it will be required for most cleaning and servicing. However, you won't need any tools to remove the tractor deck. Just be sure to wear all necessary safety equipment and follow safety protocols when working on the deck.

      Park the Pony Troy-Bilt lawn tractor on level ground. Push the brake pedal in while engaging the parking brake switch. Move the clutch into the "Disengaged" position.

      Disengage the PTO, or power take off, lever. Move the key to the "Off" position and take it out of the ignition. Lift the rubber boot off the spark plug and place it in an area where it won't touch the spark plug during servicing.

      Move the deck lift lever to drop the deck to its lowest setting. Pull the self-tapping screw out of the belt keeper rod on the engine pulley. Take the belt keeper rod off the pulley. Slide the belt off the engine pulley and the idler pulley.

      Pull the cotter pin out of the deck support rod on the left side of the mower. Move the deck support rod out of the deck lift arm. Move to the right side of the tractor and repeat the process for the right deck support rod.

      Move the deck lift lever up again to get the lift arms out of the way. Slide the cutting deck slightly forward and unhook the deck from the deck stabilizing rod. Pull the hairpin clip from the PTO cable on the rear of the deck and disconnect the PTO cable.

      Unhook the spring from the deck idler bracket. Slide the mower deck out from under the mower from the left side. Reverse the steps to reinstall the deck.
