How to Replace a Mower Deck on a John Deere

John Deere lawn tractors have a removable mower deck that contains the mower blades and mower belts. Although removal of the mower deck often is necessary to remove old blades and for cleaning, replacement of the mower deck rarely is necessary. If you happen to run over a large rock or a piece of wood, you may damage the deck. Large dents in the deck can lower the deck's efficiency and cause damage to the engine if the blades get caught.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the mower onto a flat surface.

    • 2

      Set the parking brake.

    • 3

Lower the mower deck to the lowest position.

    • 4

Pull the mower belt off from the pulley at the front of the mower. Pull on the idler pulley between the front pulley and the pulleys on the mower deck to give the belt slack.

    • 5

Remove the belt guard from the mower deck using a socket wrench.

    • 6

Take a picture of the routing of the belts on the mower deck.

    • 7

Remove the pins holding the mower deck onto the mower. This differs among most John Deere models, so reference your owner's manual.

    • 8

Pull off the deck belts and transfer them to the new deck using the picture as a reference.

    • 9

Slide the mower deck under the mower and reattach in the reverse order of its removal.
