How to Repair a Broken Belt of a Lawn Boy Riding Lawnmower

The MTD Lawn Boy mower deck comes in 38, 42 and 46 deck sizes. Running between a series of pulleys on the deck and under the engine is a belt. The pulley underneath the engine spins, turning the belt. As the belt turns, the pulleys on the mower deck move, spinning the mower blades. Friction and bad weather will eventually cause the belt on your Lawn Boy to wear down and eventually break. Replacement parts are available from authorized Lawn Boy and MTD retailers.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the spark plug from the Lawn Boy mower with a wrench to keep it from starting while you work on the engine.

    • 2

Lower the cutting deck to the lowest position.

    • 3

Pull on the belt underneath the engine to remove it from the engine pulley. The engine pulley extends down from the motor housing. Removing the belt from the engine pulley will allow you to remove the belt from the deck.

    • 4

Disconnect the hairpins holding the mower deck in place using pliers. The hairpins are long metal pieces shaped like hairpins inserted between the deck and the mower frame. Removing the pins unhooks the deck. Hit the stabilizer rod -- a long, round metal piece extending from the back of a 46 inch deck -- with a chisel and hammer to remove the rod and release the deck.

    • 5

Take a photo of the belt alignment on the mower deck. Some Lawn Boys also have a routing diagram for the belt.

    • 6

Wrap the new belt around the pulleys and replace the deck. Pull the belt forward and attach it to the engine pulley.
