How to Check the Oil in a Toro Snowblower

Properly used, a Toro snowblower can remove snow from a large area in a fraction of the time it would take to physically remove the snow with a shovel. Toro snowblowers are equipped with an oil-cooled engine. As with all internal combustion engines, ensuring that the snowblower’s engine has an adequate supply of oil is important to prevent mechanical damage and to preserve the lifespan of the unit. Checking the oil on a Toro snowblower is a straightforward process due to the convenient location of the oil filler cap.

Things You'll Need

  • 10W-30 or 5W-30 engine oil

Instructions

    • 1

Position the snowblower on a level surface to ensure an accurate oil reading.

    • 2

Remove any debris that surrounds the oil filler cap with a rag. The oil filler cap is located on the left side of the back of the engine.

    • 3

Remove the oil filler cap by twisting the cap in a counterclockwise direction until it detaches from the engine. Note that the oil level indicator is attached to the underside of the cap.

    • 4

Wipe the oil off the oil level indicator with a clean rag, then insert the indicator into the engine and withdraw it.

    • 5

Determine whether you must add engine oil. Note that a crosshatch pattern is stamped into the shaft of the oil level indicator. The engine does not require additional oil if the oil level rests at the top of the crosshatch pattern.

    • 6

Pour new oil into the engine through the oil filler cap opening if necessary. Fill the engine with 10W-30 grade oil if operating in temperatures that do not fall below 0 degrees, and with 5W-30 if operating the snowblower in below 0 temperatures.

    • 7

Tighten the oil filler cap onto the engine by rotating the cap in a clockwise direction until the cap is snug.
