How to Work on a Mulching Push Mower

Getting the right balance of nutrients in the yard is tough. One of the most nitrogen-rich fertilizers for your lawn are grass clippings. But leaving large clippings in the yard can lead to thatch which chokes off the ground, blocking out water and soil-penetrating nutrients. A mulching lawn mower either catches the clippings in a bag for later raking or cuts up the grass tiny enough to be absorbed back into the lawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up the rear cover of the mower and attach the mulching bag to the back of the mower by hanging the clips at the top of the bag on the handle and resting the lower portion of the bag under the mower flap.

    • 2

Pull out the hairpin clips on the handle and adjust the height. Reinsert the hairpin clips to use the unit.

    • 3

Plug in the mower with an extension cord if using an electric unit, or fill up the unit with gas.

    • 4

Press the primer bulb three times if using a gas mower.

    • 5

Adjust the wheel height by pulling out on the wheel-height adjustment lever. Lower the mower so that the blade cuts 1/3 of the grass height.

    • 6

Mow the lawn in a straight line, overlapping each pass by lining up the wheels of the mower with the wheel marks from the previous pass.

    • 7

Empty the bag when it is half full. Remove the bag if you feel the mower laboring.
