How to Install a Belt on a Yard Machine Lawnmower

Companies often build products under the branding of a different company. For example, MTD manufactures Yard Machine mowers. Consumers get the higher quality of the known brand but at a price commensurate with the lesser band name. Fortunately, for Yard Machine owners, the process for replacing the mower deck drive belt is straightforward due to quality craftsmanship of Yard Machine-branded mowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Disengage the mower deck and set the parking brake. Turn off the Yard Machine mower and give it 20 minutes to cool down if the motor is hot.

    • 2

Position yourself in front of the mower and look under it to locate the PTO pulley directly below the engine. Pull the guard pins off the pulley mounting block, using pliers.

    • 3

Rotate the pulley clockwise with one hand while you pull the belt off the pulley with the other hand.

    • 4

Locate the long spring on the back of the deck on the left side. Remove the spring from the lawn tractor with a spring puller to release tension on the drive belt.

    • 5

Remove the hairpins from the linkage rod pins and pull both front linkage rods down and out of the way.

    • 6

Remove the belt covers from each side of the mower deck with the screwdriver and set the covers aside.

    • 7

Pull the old belt off the mower deck and replace it with the new one. The deck has many pulleys on it. If you won't remember how to route the belt, make a diagram before taking off the old belt.

    • 8

Reinstall the belt guards onto the mower deck, reconnect the linkage rods and secure with the hairpins.

    • 9

Pull the belt forward to the front of the mower and place the belt onto the PTO pulley.

    • 10

Place the guard pins back into the mounting bracket for the PTO pulley.
