Instructions for Mower Deck Belts

Mowers have a series of pulleys on the deck and under the engine that control drive and the motion of the mower blades. Friction from the belts moving over the pulleys causes the belts to wear down over time. When the belts become brittle, they crack. This may cause the mower to stop moving or the blades to stop spinning. Replace the belts every couple hundred hours of use. Check your owner's manual for a replacement schedule.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the mower to a flat surface.

    • 2

Pull off the spark plug connector from the unit to keep it from starting. Remove the ignition key.

    • 3

Lower the mower deck to the lowest position.

    • 4

Remove the nuts holding the belt guard in place using a socket wrench. Pull the deck guard from the unit.

    • 5

Remove the nuts from the belt keeper rod surrounding the round pulley underneath the engine. The pulley extends underneath the unit. Pull the rod from around the pulley.

    • 6

Loosen the nuts on the idler pulleys sitting on the deck. Do not remove the nuts. This gives the belt slack.

    • 7

Take a picture of the belt routing on the mower deck.

    • 8

Pull the belt out of the unit.

    • 9

Route the new belt around the pulleys.

    • 10

Tighten the idler pulley rods and replace the guard around the engine pulley.

    • 11

Replace the deck guard and connect the spark plug.

    • 12

Start the engine and run the mower deck at full throttle. Listen for any bad sounds. Lower the mower deck again and inspect the belts to ensure they are still connected.
