How to Connect Your Primer on a Lawn Mower

During normal operation, gas is automatically pushed into the carburetor via the pulsing of the crankcase and the fuel pump's suction. However, when the crankshaft isn't spinning at full power, the gas still needs to reach the carburetor for the engine to start. The primer function on a lawn mower allows the operator to manually pump gas into the carburetor when the crankcase isn't moving. This primer can be disconnected or ripped off easily. It also must come off every time the fuel hoses are replaced, so it must be reconnected properly for the lawnmower to start again.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the primer's position on the engine. Some primers sit directly on top of the carburetor and others are just to the side of the carburetor, closer to the fuel tank.

    • 2

Set the primer directly onto the carburetor and press it down, if applicable for the model. Tighten the mounting screws to attach the primer to the engine, if necessary.

    • 3

Press both fuel hoses into the underside of the primer if it sits away from the carburetor, closer to the fuel tank. Make sure the fuel hoses are fully inserted and secured. Set the primer down into its mounting hole. Tighten the mounting screws if necessary for the model.
