Gas Lawn Edger Troubleshooting

Lawnmowers are good for cutting large patches of grass, but not all areas of the lawn are large and rectangular. Curves and areas where grass meets pathways require a bit more cutting precision. Lawn edgers have a blade that sits vertically. This blade is run along the ground to create sharp edges or soft curves. The small engine of an edger requires regular maintenance to prevent issues. When they do occur, troubleshooting will help you isolate the issue.

Instructions

  1. Will Not Start

Inspect the fuel tank. Fill it to the top if it is empty. Remove old fuel that has sat in the tank for over a month and replace it with fresh fuel.

    • 2

Press the primer bulb ten times to prime the engine.

    • 3

Set the engine with the throttle slightly engaged if the engine is flooded. Let the unit rest for several minutes if the unit will not start.

Unscrew the spark plug and inspect it for signs of rust or decay. Replace the spark plug if necessary.

    • 5

      Clean the spark arrestor.

    Performance Issues

    • 6

Remove the screw or press down the tabs that hold the air filter cover in place. Inspect the filter for signs of dirt. Remove the air filter and replace it if soiled.

    • 7

Adjust the carburetor according to the instructions in your manual, or send your unit to an authorized service technician if the unit still cuts out while idling.

    • 8

Inspect the tines of the unit with the engine off if they will not move. Remove any dirt or debris clogging the tines.
