How to Change the Belts on a Murray Riding Lawn Mower

Murray lawn tractors have a motion drive belt and a mower drive belt. The motion belt moves the mower forward and backward depending on the mower setting you control. The mower drive belts run from the front of the unit to the back and controls the motion of the mower blades. The drive belts wear down, crack and snap after hundreds of hours of work time. These belts need replacement to keep the mower in working order.

Instructions

  1. Motion Drive Belt

    • 1

Move the mower blade to the disengage position and move the lift lever for the deck to the level adjustment position.

    • 2

Remove the hair pins from the adjuster arms holding the mower deck in place. Pull on the spring holding the blade control rod near where the lift lever meets the mower deck.

    • 7

Loosen the screws holding the belt guides in place in the battery well.

Pull the belt from the pulleys.

    • 9

Install the new belt in the same routing as the old.

    Replace the Drive Belt

    • 10

Remove the mower deck as instructed above.

    • 11

Take a picture of the belt routing.

    • 12

Pull out on the belt retainers on each pulley and remove the belt.

    • 13

Route the new belt in the same orientation.
