How to Determine the Direction of the Chain on a Chainsaw

Many sawyers, especially professionals, may refuse to admit that they have put a chainsaw chain on backwards. They may have even cut with it on backwards and wondered why it would only cut slowly through wood. Whether in a hurry, or they just simply forgot to check the chain's direction, the sawyer will laugh at themselves later on, hoping no one noticed. Before starting up your chainsaw, always check the direction of the chain.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the chainsaw off and let the chain stop spinning before checking the chain's direction. Put the work gloves on before touching on the chainsaw chain.

    • 2

Pull back on the front hand guard to disengage the safety brake, allowing the chain to spin freely. Look at the chainsaw chain's teeth to see which direction they point.

    • 3

Reverse the chainsaw chain if the teeth's top angle, or the sharpest angle, points backwards toward the engine. Leave the chain in place if the top plate's sharpest angle points forward, toward the nose of the bar.
