How to Change the Gas Lines on a Craftsman

The gas lines on Craftsman gas-powered lawn and garden equipment deliver fuel to the carburetor for combustion. These gas lines can clog easily from fuel impurities or accidental debris inside the fuel. When these lines become blocked, fuel will stop flowing, the engine will stop and it may not start again. Fuel lines should be replaced at least every other season.

Things You'll Need

  • Approved fuel container
  • Screwdriver
  • Metal hook
  • Needle-nosed pliers
  • Scissors
  • Fuel tubing

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew and remove the cap on the fuel tank. Tilt the engine on its side and drain the remaining fuel into a fuel container. Unscrew or unhook the air filter cover and remove it. Take the air filter pad out of the engine.

    • 2

Unscrew, if necessary, the air filter box's two mounting screws to access the carburetor. Pluck the two fuel lines off the elbow connectors on the carburetor using your fingers. Reach into the fuel tank with a metal hook and draw the fuel filter and fuel line toward the opening.

    • 3

Pull out the fuel filter and main fuel hose with needle-nosed pliers. Cut off a 7-to-10-inch section of fuel tubing. Press the end of the hose through the hole near the carburetor. Push the tubing through the engine until 3 inches remains in the fuel tank.

    • 4

Lift the fuel line to the tank opening and press the replacement fuel filter's nozzle into the fuel line. Drop the fuel line and filter back to the bottom of the tank. Repeat the same process with the secondary fuel line. Unscrew, if necessary, the Craftsman's primer bulb attached either directly to the carburetor or to the purge line.

    • 5

Pull the second fuel hose out of the Craftsman. Cut a 7-to-10-inch section of tubing and press it through the hole near the carburetor. Push the line through until it reaches either the tank or the opening near the tank.

    • 6

Attach the secondary line to the primer bulb if necessary. Attach another section of tubing to the primer bulb and push it through the hole on the fuel tank. Press both tube ends into their respective elbow connectors on the carburetor.
