Unscrew the tiller's gas cap and lift it over to its side, carefully draining all the fuel in the tank into the fuel container. Disconnect the rubber spark plug wire from the end of the plug, positioning the wire so it won't contact the metal plug.
Unscrew the air filter box mounted to the side of the engine near the fuel tank and remove it from the tiller. Unscrew, if necessary, the two bolts mounting the clutch plate to the front of the carburetor, lifting off the clutch plate. Disconnect the throttle cable from the side of the carburetor.
Disconnect the main fuel line from the elbow connector on the carburetor. Grasp the fuel filter and main fuel line, sitting at the bottom of the tank, and draw them into the tank opening with a metal hook. Rip the fuel filter off the end of the hose. Pull the hose out of the tank with pliers.
Cut a section of fuel tubing 8 to 12 inches long. Push the fuel tubing through the access hole beside the carburetor; keep pushing the hose until it emerges at least 3 inches inside the fuel tank. Draw the fuel hose into the tank opening with the wire again. Press the nozzle of the new filter into the hose.
Drop both the filter and hose into the bottom of the fuel tank. Repeat the process for the second line, if necessary, or reassemble all other parts in reverse order.
