How to Replace Gas Lines on MTD Two-Cycle Garden Tillers

The gas lines on an MTD two-cycle garden tiller provide a way for fuel to reach the tank. As the crankshaft pulses, the fuel pump diaphragm squeezes inside the carburetor and sucks fuel up into the carburetor. If the fuel pump can't deliver enough fuel to the carburetor, the engine will shut down. You will probably need to replace a gas line whenever engine performance drops due to a decrease in fuel inside the carburetor, which is usually as a result of a broken, cracked or gummed up gas line.

Things You'll Need

  • Approved fuel container
  • Screwdriver
  • Metal hook
  • Scissors
  • Fuel tubing
  • Pliers
  • Replacement fuel filter

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the MTD tiller's ignition switch into the "Off" position. Unhook the spark plug wire and set the boot so it won't contact the plug during repairs. Unscrew the gas cap and lift the tiller carefully up and tilt it so any remaining fuel drains into the fuel container.

    • 2

Unscrew the air filter box and pull it off the engine. Set the choke lever to its closed position. Unscrew the choke cover plate's two mounting screws and remove them from the engine. Disconnect the throttle cable arm from the carburetor fitting.

    • 3

Unhook both fuel hoses from their carburetor connectors. Reach into the fuel tank and pull out the fuel filter, attached to the main gas line, using the metal hook. Pry off the fuel filter from the gas line. Pull the fuel line out of the tiller with your hands.

Cut off a fuel tubing section 8 to 10 inches in length. Press the fuel hose through the hole for the main fuel line near the carburetor. Continue pushing the line into the tank. Reach into the tank with the metal hook and pliers and pull it towards the tank opening.

    • 5

Fit the nozzle end of the new fuel filter into the end of the main gas line. Press both of them down into the tank's bottom. Pull the second fuel hose out of the engine via the carburetor end, using the pliers, if necessary.

Cut off a second piece of length of fuel tubing for the purge hose line. Press the fuel hose through the engine via the hole near the carburetor. Press the line until it reaches the tank. Reconnect both hoses to their respective connectors on the carburetor. Reinstall everything else in reverse order.
