How to Fix a Featherlite Weedeater That Will Not Spin

Gas-powered Featherlite weedeaters are a useful tool for many homeowners in the war on weeds. These types of trimmers cut plants using a rapidly spinning wire. The motor is likely to blame if the unit will not start or spin the wire when you pull the throttle. A quick examination of the unit should enable you to identify and resolve the issue.

Things You'll Need

  • Fresh fuel
  • Two-stroke oil
  • Champion RCJ-6Y spark plug
  • Socket wrench set

Empty the fuel if it has been in the tank more than a few months. Moisture and dirt could have contaminated the mixture, making it unsuitable for use. Mix a fresh batch of unleaded gasoline and two-stroke oil at a ratio of 40-to-1 and refill the tank. The motor is easier to start with fresh fuel.

Pull the rubber boot off the top of the spark plug, located on top of the engine. Unscrew the spark plug and fit a replacement Champion RCJ-6Y into the socket at a gap of 0.025 inches using a 3/4-inch socket wrench. Slip the boot back over the plug and attempt to restart the engine. A burned out or dirty spark plug will prevent the engine from running and the wire spool from turning.

Slide the choke lever to the "OFF CHOKE" position if multiple unsuccessful starting attempts have flooded the engine with fuel. Pull the starter cord a few times to clear excess gasoline from the engine, and move the choke to "HALF" if the engine is warm or "FULL" if it is cold.

Shut the unit off and pull the tap button near the spool to release it from the unit. Check the area for plant matter or other debris wound around the spinning shaft. Enough material could have accumulated around the spool to cause it to jam. Once the area is clear, re-attach the spool and try the engine again.
