How to Install a Clutch on a 026 STIHL Chainsaw

The clutch on an 026 Stihl chainsaw uses the outward force from the crankshaft to push out the clutch shoes, engaging the sprocket and chain. When the engine slows, the outward pressure decreases, the clutch shoes retract and the chain stops spinning. The clutch on an 026 needs to work properly for the chain to engage and disengage at the proper time. If a loud grinding noise or whining starts emanating from the clutch, it's time to install a new clutch.

Push the three retainers into the center of the three clutch shoes. Fit the three clutch shoes onto the arms of the clutch carrier, making sure the large hexagon in the center of the carrier faces the same direction as the serial on the clutch shoes.

Set the clutch's bottom into the vise and tighten the vise. Hook the clutch springs onto one end of the clutch shoes. Pull the springs with the metal hook, attaching the other ends of the springs onto the clutch shoes.

Set the assembled clutch onto the crankshaft. Fit the clutch removal tool over the clutch hub. Tighten the clutch hub counterclockwise for a reverse thread.

    • 4

Set the washer, clutch drum, sprocket and needle cage bearing onto the crankshaft. Secure the clutch to the crankshaft, fitting a new E-clip around the crankshaft.

Remove the piston-stop tool to unblock the piston. Refit the spark plug and tighten it down with the combination bar tool. Reconnect the spark plug wire. Reattach the chain, bar and bar cover with the combination bar tool.
