Set the chain saw's ignition switch into the "Stop" position. Wait for any moving parts to stop and for the engine to cool down. Unscrew the air filter cover using the screwdriver end of the bar tool.
Take the air filter cover and air filter off the Poulan. Brush the area around the filter, the choke plate, the air filter and the air filter mounting area. Wipe off any oil and dirt with the rag. Replace the air filter if it can't be brushed clean. Clean the air filter after each use.
Unscrew the fuel tank cap and drain all remaining fuel into the fuel container. Pull out the fuel filter and fuel hose with the metal hook. Pry off the fuel filter (replace seasonally) and check the condition of the fuel hose. Replace the hose if it's cracked, yellow or brittle. Replace hoses every other season.
Slowly pull off the rubber boot attached to the end of the spark plug. Unscrew the plug with the large socket side on the combination bar tool. Replace the spark plug with a new one, at least once a season, if the tip is covered in carbon or looks bent or damaged in any way. Check the condition of the boot and attaching wires.
Take the Poulan into a mechanic for all other service repairs.
