Switch the Ryobi trimmer's ignition button into the "Off" position. Let the trimmer cool off before making any repairs. Lay the trimmer flat on a work bench or a level area of ground. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug before making any repairs.
Wipe off the exterior of the engine with the rag and brush. Clear away all dust, weeds and dirt from the engine. Continue down the shaft and to the cutting head. Clean off as much stuck on weeds and dirt as possible.
Loosen the screw holding the air filter/muffler cover to the back of the trimmer. Take the cover off and lift out the air filter pad. Wash the air filter in soapy water. Rinse through cool water and dry it for at least four hours. Replace filters too dirty to clean. Brush or wipe away any dirt around the filter cover, the filter box and the choke plate.
Loosen and remove the fuel cap. Drain any remaining fuel from the trimmer into the approved fuel container. Hook the fuel filter and fuel line, dragging them to the tank's opening. Pry off the fuel filter from the end of the gas line. Press the new filter's nozzle straight into the hose.
Unscrew the spark plug and take it out of the cylinder. Fit the replacement plug into the cylinder hole and tighten it with your fingers. Tighten it fully, but not too tight, using the socket wrench. Refit the boot back over the spark plug.
