Check the fuel tank and make sure there is adequate fuel. Remove the fuel tank cap. Add fuel to the tank, if necessary. If the fuel is older than 30 days, you may want to use fresh fuel. Tighten the fuel cap.
Check the fuel valve, which is located at the right side of the tiller near the carburetor. Turn the fuel valve towards the engine to turn it on.
Check the engine switch, located on the left handlebar. The engine switch must be in the "On" position before the tiller will start. Turn the switch to the "On" position, using your fingers.
Remove the spark plug. Turn the engine switch to the "Off" position. Remove the spark plug lead using your fingers and remove the spark plug using a spark plug wrench. If the engine is flooded you may need to wipe the fuel off of the spark plug before the engine will start. Wipe the spark plug using a rag. If the spark plug is cracked, it should be replaced. Reinstall the spark plug. Reattach the spark plug lead. Turn the engine switch to the "On" position.
Clean the air filter, which is located at the top of the engine on the right side. Remove the air cleaner cover wing nut and the air filter wing nut using pliers. Lift up and remove the air filter. Remove the foam surrounding the air filter. Clean the foam with soap and water. If the air filter or foam is damaged, replace them. Reinstall the air filter and cover, tightening the wing nuts using pliers.
