Directions for Fuel & Oil Filter Replacements in John Deere 4600

The John Deere 4600 was produced from 1999 until 2003. The 4600 was equipped with a 43-horsepower Yanmar four-cylinder diesel engine. The 4600 transmission was fitted with nine forward gears and three reverse gears. The 4600 also came available in 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains. The 4600 oil filter and fuel filter housings are located underneath the hood and side panel of the tractor. Replacement of the oil and fuel filters should be performed by someone with prior diesel-mechanical or farm-equipment knowledge.

Instructions

  1. John Deere 4600: Oil Filter Replacement Instructions

    • 1

Raise the hood and set the hood props on the right and left side. Move to the right side (sitting on the tractor) of the engine compartment. Remove the side panel mounting hardware with a ratchet and socket. Pull the right side panel off of the engine compartment.

    • 2

Place a drip pan directly beneath the oil filter, on the frame of the tractor. Remove the oil filter from the side of the tractor with an oil filter wrench. Place the old filter into the drip pan. Make sure the rubber o-ring gasket is still on the old filter. If it is not on the filter, remove the o-ring from the oil filter engine mount. Wipe the oil filter engine mount clean with a rag.

    • 3

Lubricate the new oil filter o-ring with fresh oil, by dipping your finger in fresh oil and wiping the new gasket. Install the new oil filter and turn it as snug by hand. Turn the filter a half turn farther to acquire the proper 25 foot-pounds of torque needed for this filter.

    • 4

Top off the oil using John Deere Plus-50 II 5w40 Diesel oil.

    • 5

Install the side panel and tighten the hardware snug with a ratchet and socket. Lower the hood.

Place a drip pan directly beneath the fuel filter, on the front frame. Place one hand beneath the filter housing. Unlock the fuel filter lock ring by hand, or use large channel locks if needed. Do not crush the ring with channel locks. Remove the filter ring while holding the filter housing in place.

Pull the entire fuel filter housing free from the filter mount. Pour the old fuel filter and residual fuel into the drip pan. Pour fresh diesel into the fuel filter housing cover until it is three quarters full, then set the cover gently onto the frame of the tractor.

Install the new fuel filter onto the fuel filter mount. Insert a new spring into the center of the filter, along with the float ring. Hold these pieces with one hand, while installing the cover. Install a new o-ring onto the filter housing cover. Install the filter housing cover over the new filter, then install the fuel ring onto the cover. Tighten the fuel ring snug by hand.
