Instructions for Using a Gas-Powered Flower Bed Shaper

Flower bed shapers have the technical name of edgers and consist of rotating blades that dig down into the soil. By creating a shallow trench, the edgers prevent grass roots from extending outside the flower bed. Although edgers come in gas and electric models, gas models have more power. Using an edger is not a challenging task, but with so much flying debris, homeowners must always wear the proper safety gear.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety glasses, work gloves and ear protection before starting the edging process. If you have allergies or respiratory issues, wear a dust mask.

    • 2

Unscrew the gas cap and fill the tank with the type and amount of fuel indicated in the instruction manual.

    • 3

Walk to the end of the flower bed and start the edger by pulling out the power cord rapidly.

    • 4

Place the horizontal lip on the side of the edger blade onto the pavers, sidewalk or other surface framing the flower bed. The wheels of the edger should be on the outside of the flower bed, either on a sidewalk or the grass.

    • 5

Push the edger forward at a slow, steady pace following the edge of the flower bed until you reach the opposite end. Turn off the edger and sweep or rake up any undesired grass clippings.
