Do It Yourself Landscape Trench

Flat landscapes with small dips may collect water during heavy spring rains and after the winter snow melts. Flooding can cause disease in plants as well as root rot and lead plants to die if not handled properly. A trench installed in the yard will aid in water drainage. A french drain is the most common type of simple trench. It is cheap to install and does not require heavy digging equipment. A french drain collects water and directs it to a low spot in the yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the low point of your yard. Place a laser level next to the house and point it out to the yard. Move it back and forth to find to spot where the yard moves downward from the laser level.

    • 2

Dig a trench that is 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep running around the house and down towards the low spot in your yard.

    • 3

Line the bottom of the trench with landscape fabric.

    • 4

Cover the landscape fabric with 1 inch of 1 inch diameter rounded washed gravel.

    • 5

Lay a 6 inch diameter perforated pipe on top of the stone.

    • 6

Cover the perforated pipe with more washed gravel, so that the trench is filled to within 1 inch from the top with the stone.

    • 7

Cover the trench with 1 inch of soil to cover the rock.

    • 8

Place a layer of sod over the soil on the rock to cover the trench completely. Water the sod daily until it takes root.
