How to Install a Pull Rope on a John Deere TRS26 Snow Blower

Most small engines, including the one on the John Deere TRS26 snow blower have a recoil starter. The way it works is by pulling a rope out of the snow blower to start the engine. Over time, the rope will begin to fray and will eventually break. When this happens, you will need to replace the rope with a new one. The repair is not hard, and in most cases, you can finish the job in less than 30 minutes. You do not need any special tools to do the job and the ones you will need are in most home toolboxes.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the plug wire from the spark plug by grasping the boot and pulling it away from the plug. Never pull on the wire to remove it from the plug or you will damage it.

    • 2

Remove the starter assembly from the engine by removing the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the assembly away from the engine.

    • 3

Remove the old starter cord from the assembly by cutting it with a pair of scissors if it is still present.

    • 4

Turn the starter pulley clockwise to tighten it. After you begin to feel it tighten, back off one full turn.

    • 5

Insert one end of the new starter cord into the eyelet of the starter housing and through the opening on the starter pulley. Tie a knot in the end of the cord to secure it to the pulley.

    • 6

Insert the other end of the new starter cord into the starter handle. Tie a knot in the end of it so the handle cannot come off.

    • 7

Release the pulley and allow it to retract the starter cord into the starter housing slowly. Pull the cord out several times and allow it to recoil to be sure that the pulley pulls it back in every time.

    • 8

Place the starter assembly on the engine and tighten the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the spark plug wire onto the plug and make sure it snaps into place.
