How to Replace the Belt on a John Deere TRS 21 Snowblower

A John Deer TRS 21 snowblower will help you spend less time shoveling snow off driveways, walkways, patios and decks and more time sitting by the fire enjoying hot cocoa. That is, unless the belt on your John Deere blower begins to slip or it breaks. Instead of breaking out the old snow shovel and throwing snow over 10-foot-tall snow banks, replace the belt to get the snowblower operating again.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws from the shroud located on the top of the snowblower, behind the chute. The shroud has John Deere printed on the top and is vented on three sides.

    • 2

Take the shroud off the snowblower to expose the spark plug. Pull the plug wire of the top of the spark plug to ensure the snowblower doesn’t start accidentally.

    • 3

Remove the six screws holding the belt cover to the side of the snowblower. Face the back of the machine and locate the belt on the left side.

    • 4

Locate the belt guide next to the engine drive pulley, the smaller of the two pulleys encompassed by the belt. Take off the nut holding the belt guide over the belt using a socket wrench. Lift the guide off the belt.

    • 5

Push down on the idler arm located at the top of the belt. This pushes the brake off the belt and lets you take the belt off the auger drive pulley, the larger of the two pulleys encompassed by the belt. Remove the belt from the snowblower.

    • 6

Loosen the nut in the center of the idler arm pulley located at the end of the idler arm using the socket wrench. Push the idler pulley to the top of the slot in the idler arm. Tighten the nut on the idler pulley to secure the pulley in this location.

    • 7

Install the new belt around the engine drive pulley and the auger drive pulley. Lower the belt guide over the new belt and use the socket wrench to tighten the nut.

    • 8

Replace the belt cover. Push the plug wire back onto the spark plug. Replace the shroud.
