How to Check the Ignition Coil on a Homelite Weedeater

The ignition coil in a Homelite weedeater generates and fires off the high-voltage charge needed for combustion. The coil sits inside the ignition module and can't be taken out without damaging the coil and the module. However, a simple spark test will tell the operator if the ignition coil needs replacing or not.

Things You'll Need

  • Leather work gloves
  • Socket wrench
  • 5/8-inch deep-set socket
  • Spark plug (if necessary)
  • Spark tester

Instructions

    • 1

Set the Homelite weedeater in a safe place where the head won't hit anything should the engine start during ignition troubleshooting. Move the ignition lever firmly into the "On" setting.

    • 2

Unhook the rubber boot connected to the end of the spark plug. Unscrew the spark plug using the socket wrench and deep-set socket. Check the tip of the plug to make sure it isn't blackened, bent or broken. Replace the spark plug if necessary.

    • 3

Refit the spark plug back into the cylinder, but don't connect the rubber boot. Connect the lead end of the spark tester to the Homelite's rubber boot. Connect the tester to the spark plug.

    • 4

Pull rapidly on the starter rope at least four times. Check for a blue spark to jump across the tester's electrode gap. If no spark is present, clamp the spark tester to the base of the spark plug and repeat the test. If no spark is present, the ignition module will need to be replaced.

    • 5

Allow a service professional to replace the ignition module or further test the trimmer's ignition system.
