How to Use Interlocking Compost Fence Panels

Interlocking compost fence panels are used by a number of manufacturers to create modular compost bin systems, allowing for fast and easy assembly and disassembly as well as expansion, when needed. They are modeled on the traditional compost bins constructed with wooden fence panels. These systems or kits can be made of plastic, fiberglass or chemically treated wood panels, but all are assembled in much the same way. Some brands will use fasteners at the corners, while others simply slide together at the joints. The individual fence panels are lightweight, which makes erecting a compost bin much easier for the home gardener with no carpentry skills. The slat systems also allow for air flow necessary for rapid composting. Any bin product will be accompanied by manufacturer specific instructions, but assembly is rather straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the location where you want to erect your interlocking compost bin.

    • 2

Unpack and unwrap the individual compost fencing panels, setting the included fasteners, if any, aside at arm's reach but in a safe location.

    • 3

Lay out the bottom row of base fence panels on the ground horizontally, in the size and configuration of your model of compost bin, typically a square or rectangle.

    • 4

Start at one corner of the bin and make the connection between the first two panels, interlocking or overlapping them so that the pre-drilled holes are aligned.

    • 5

Insert one of the provided screws or bolts through the two fence panel ends and secure tightly with the drill and screwdriver bits.

    • 6

Connect bin panels that do not use hardware by interlacing the panels, sliding one panel down into the groove on the mated panel until the two are connected fully and level. Slide the panels gently using a rubber mallet, if necessary.

    • 7

Move to the next corner and repeat the process. Once all four corners of the bin base are connected and sturdy, move to the second layer of fencing panels.

    • 8

Repeat the process layer by layer until the bin is constructed completely.
