Clamp a piece of 5-inch PVC pipe into a large vice.
Cut a 12-inch section from the pipe with a hacksaw.
Sand the cut end of the pipe with 80-grit sandpaper to remove any burrs.
Brush a coat of PVC glue into the inside of a 5-inch PVC end cap. Slide the cap onto one end of the pipe section and allow the glue to dry.
Drill several 1 1/2-inch holes randomly in the sides of the planter. The number of holes depends on how dense you want the plants.
Drill several 1/4-inch holes in the end cap for drainage. Do not drill these holes in the center; keep them positioned on the outer edges.
Cut a 12-inch section of 1-inch PVC pipe.
Drill a row of 1/8-inch holes every inch through both sides of the smaller pipe. Rotate the pipe 90 degrees and repeat the process, producing four rows of holes.
Dip one end of the smaller pipe into PVC glue. Stand it on the center of the end cap within the planter. Allow the glue to dry.
Drill two 1/4-inch holes in the top of the larger pipe, positioned on opposite ends. Tie a loop of string through these holes so you can hang the planter.
Fill the space between the two pipes with dirt, inserting a young plant into each drilled hole on the sides as the planter is filled.
Fill the inner pipe with water, which will trickle out of the small holes and evenly water the planter.
