A drip irrigation system consists of many different types of tubing, clamps, adapters, connectors, valves and emitters that deliver the water from the faucet to the soil surface. Beginners may want to purchase a kit. Many different types of kits are sold, but, if possible, choose one designed for container plants or hanging baskets to ensure that you have all the parts needed for the job and that you don't purchase excess parts that you don't need. Look for a kit with detailed and clear instructions specific to your kit type. A video of the installation process at the manufacturer's website may also be helpful. Some manufacturers create kits based on how many baskets you will be watering. Kits don't usually come with a timer but should be compatible with a timer.
You will need to design the layout of your system to plan how the tubing and connections will be arranged to accommodate multiple baskets. If different plants have different watering requirements, you can create multiple zones that can be operated independently. You will need to design a route for the tubing from the water source to the plant area. Don't bury the tubing underground to prevent damage. If possible, plan a route where the tubing is secured to a structure or to the basket's hanging apparatus, keeping it as concealed as possible. The extra stability will prevent accidental pulling.
The irrigation system can be run manually or on a timer. You will need to experiment with your particular plants to determine how long and how frequently to run the system. Use a water meter to determine the moisture level of the containers after the system has run for a specific amount of time, which will be your guide for future adjustments. Check the system periodically to ensure it is operating properly. Disassemble and empty the system for the winter. The manufacturer will supply detailed instructions on running and maintenance.
Even though drip irrigation systems are relatively easy to set up and use, you may run into problems. There could be air in the system, buzzing sounds, leaks or other problems. The first place to go to for help is the manufacturer. Drip irrigation manufacturers generally have a wealth of resources on their websites as well as customer service assistance.
