How to Remove Large Particles from a Slurry

Sifting large particles from a farm slurry can be accomplished in several ways, some more effective than others. The most effective way to remove large particles from your livestock's organic waste is to screen the slurry through a metal screen. This will effectively reduce the amount of large particles in the slurry, but you will have to occasionally clear the built-up particles from the mesh to prevent the slurry from overflowing or backing up. The benefit of this, however, is that as liquid moves over the large particles, it will systematically tumble the particles over and over, breaking them up into smaller particles that will pass through the screen and can be used for fertilizer.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the machine in which the slurry is created, including the water supply from its main inlet. If your slurry is an all-in-one truck, ensure that the slurry tank is emptied before proceeding so that you can effectively test the mesh without the addition of organic matter.

    • 2

Form the stainless steel mesh over the outlet chute of the machine, then install the compression band over the mesh. Tighten the compression band securely with a flat screwdriver.

    • 3

Turn on the water supply to the slurry to ensure there is adequate water flow out of the outlet chute. When you are sure the mesh screen won't impede the flow of organic slurry out of the machine, add the organic matter to the slurry for spreading.

    • 4

Spread the slurry as you normally would, but when you are finished, make certain to clean off the mesh screen and clean any large, solid particles from the outlet chute or hose with a garden hose and clean water.
