How to Install a Starter Spring on a Craftsman Chain Saw

Like many gas-powered tools, Craftsman chain saws have a rope attached to a recoil spring that you use to start the engine. Pulling the rope spins the engine and applies tension to the spring. When you release the rope, the spring rewinds the rope so you can pull it again if the engine doesn't start. The recoil spring can wear out and break over time, making it difficult to start the engine. If you need to install a starter spring on a Craftsman chain saw, you'll need only a few basic tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Disable the Craftsman chain saw engine by removing the black rubber boot that connects the spark plug to the ignition coil. Secure the boot away from the spark plug to prevent it from making contact with the spark plug electrode.

    • 2

Remove the four Phillips-head screws that hold the starter assembly to the side of the engine. Pull the starter assembly off the engine.

    • 3

Unwind the starter string from the recoil starter. Untie the knot in the end of the starter string and pull the string out of the starter assembly.

    • 4

Remove the bolt holding the cover on the recoil-spring assembly, with a nut driver. Pull the spring assembly out of the starter assembly by pulling the bent ends of the spring off the retaining tabs in the assembly.

    • 5

Place the new spring in the starter assembly. Slide the bent ends of the spring over the retaining tabs in the assembly. Thread the end of the starter string through the hole in the recoil-spring assembly. Tie an overhand knot in the end of the string. Wrap the string clockwise around the starter assembly until there is no slack left in the string.

Place the cover on the recoil-spring assembly, insert the bolt and tighten it securely. Place the starter assembly on the side of the engine, insert the screws and tighten them.
