How to Build Your Own Leaf Grinder

In autumn, the leaves that fall from the trees naturally decompose on the ground, providing rich nutrients for the soil. In areas where there are a lot of deciduous trees, the leaves are gathered and often packed into plastic trash bags. They are either taken to landfills (which isn't particularly good for the environment) or used as mulch. Processing the leaves for mulch can be done by purchasing a commercial grade leaf grinder or chopping them up with a lawn mower. There is an easier and cheaper method to grind leaves -- all you need are a few common garden tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on ear and eye protection.

    • 2

Put the leaves in the garbage can until it is three-quarters full.

    • 3

Place the weed trimmer in the garbage can and work it down into the leaves until the top of the motor is submerged.

    • 4

Turn on the weed trimmer and move it around in a circular motion, being careful not to raise it above the top of the leaves.

    • 5

Push the weed trimmer further down into the leaves, grinding them until you reach the bottom of the garbage can.

    • 6

Empty the garbage can and sift through the pile of mulch for leaves that need to be ground one more time.
