How to Make Hazel Planters

Hazel wood is durable and has a rustic look. You can make your own planter from hazel sticks or twigs that you find in your yard. The planter will hold small to medium-sized plants and has an open construction to allow for drainage and air circulation. If you want a bigger or smaller planter, adjust the sizes of the sticks you use but keep the staggering rates so the planter is smaller at the bottom and larger at the top.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two 20-inch hazel sticks on a flat surface, parallel to each other. Place two 12-inch hazel sticks across each end of the longer sticks, forming a rectangle. Adjust the sticks so 1 inch of each stick projects past the stick above or below it.

    • 2

Lift the shorter sticks one at a time and place a drop of wood glue at the spot where it touches the longer sticks underneath it. Press the stick back into place and repeat with the other side. Set the rectangle aside to dry according to the instructions on the wood glue package.

    • 3

Glue two 19-inch hazel sticks on top of and perpendicular to the 12-inch sticks, pressing them into place 1 inch from the end of the 11-inch sticks. Glue two 11-inch hazel sticks across the 19-inch sticks, placing one at each end, 1 inch from the edge. Let this new layer dry.

    • 4

Glue the last layer of sticks into place, using 18-inch sticks for the long side of the rectangular planter and 10-inch sticks for the short side. Place both sets of sticks 1 inch from the edge of the sticks under them. Let the glue dry.

    • 5

Lay two 15-inch hazel sticks across the 10-inch sticks, 1/2 inch from the edge of the 10-inch sticks. Lay 11 8-inch sticks perpendicular to these and adjust them so they are evenly spaced, then glue them into place. This is the base of the planter. Let the glue dry.

    • 6

Line the planter with a hanging basket liner. Fill the planter with potting soil.
