How to Use a Four Bottom Plow

You use a plow to turn the soil of the fields before planting crops. Turning the fields cuts open the top of the soil and turn a section over over, exposing the nutrients on top that the farmer will work into the perfect planting bed. Use different types of plows suited for the size of your field, including a four bottom plow. Four bottom plows, also referred to as moldboards, have four shovel-like attachments that cut into the surface of the field and roll it over. This type of plow is suited for medium to small tractors.

Instructions

    • 1

Back the tractor up to the four bottom moldboard plow. Press the tractor's lever to lower the lift arms of the tractor. Take out the connection pins from the lift arms.

    • 2

Connect the plow's hitch onto the lift arms. If the hitch has any electrical wires that allow wheels to turn with the power of the plow's engine, attach the wires according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Pull the lever to raise the tractor's lifting arms until the plow is off the ground. Drive to the field that needs plowing. Lower the plow at the edge of the field.

    • 4

Dismount from the tractor. Visually inspect the field if you have never plowed it before. Look for any large rocks that may damage the plow blades and remove them. Contact the utility companies to ensure no hidden pipe lines, such as gas, run across the field.

Climb back onto the tractor. Begin by plowing a relatively straight line across the field. Slow down and lift the plow when reaching the end of the field. Turn around and lower the plow to create four more rows going up the field. Continue this action until having a completely plowed field.
