How to Install a Starter Spring on a Weed Eater FeatherLite

The starter spring inside a Weed Eater FeatherLite allows the starter rope to recoil after it's been pulled out. Without this spring, the operator would need to manually wind the rope onto the pulley after each pull. When the operator of the FeatherLite pulls too hard on the rope, however, the spring may be damaged. The anchor point may get bent or the spring may snap from too much tension, requiring the operator to install a new starter spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the starter pulley upside down to install the starter spring into the center. Feed the front end of the spring into the pulley, making sure the spring stays around the outside of the pulley.

    • 2

Press the opposite end of the starter spring into the pulley once the length of the spring has entered the pulley. Apply a small amount of lubrication to the center of the pulley and the pulley's bearings.

    • 3

Set the pulley onto the starter post on the underside of the starter cover. Fit the screw and washer in place, tightening the screw. Feed the starter rope in through the center of the pulley, through the starter cover and through the starter handle.

    • 4

Tie a knot in both ends of the starter rope. Press down the pulley and wiggle it back and forth to set the recoil spring. Twist a loop in the unwound rope.

    • 5

Turn the loop and pulley six to seven revolutions, following the arrow on the pulley. Hold down the pulley while unwinding the starter rope. Let your thumb off the pulley slowly to wind the rope back onto the pulley. Refit all other parts in the reverse order of their disassembly.
