How to Change a Chain on a Sears Chain Saw

When the chain on a Sears chain saw hits anything other than wood it will dull, get damaged or broken. This can occur over only a few uses, but if properly cared for, a chain will last a long time. However, without a sharp, properly working chain, the operator will need to work harder to cut through wood, which also makes his work more dangerous. To prevent injury and cut efficiently, the operator will need to regularly take the chain off and exchange it for a new and sharp chain.

Things You'll Need

  • Leather work gloves
  • Combination bar tool

Instructions

    • 1

Move the ignition switch on the Sears chain saw into the "Off" position. Wait for the chain to stop spinning before attempting to remove. Set the saw on a flat surface.

    • 2

Loosen both bar nuts on the side of the chain saw with the combination bar tool. Take the side cover, bar and chain off the saw. Lift the chain from the bar.

    • 3

Set the new chain around the bar, ensuring the teeth point forward. Fit the chain completely around the bar. Set the chain saw onto its side.

    • 4

Loop the rear of the chain around the drive sprocket on the saw. Lay the bar and chain onto the bar posts. Make sure the oiler nozzle's nipple fits properly into the oiler holes on the bar.

    • 5

Refit the cover to the bar and chain while holding the bar and chain at the nose. Adjust the chain tension as needed with a screwdriver at the front of the saw just to the right of the chain, clockwise for tightening, counterclockwise for loosening. Tighten the two bar nuts with the combination bar tool.
