How to Set Jets on a Sears Lawn Mower

The jets on a Sears lawn mower allow fuel to pass into the carburetor. These jets have a small plate on the outside that can open or close, allowing more or less fuel into the carburetor. This effectively sets the engine's speed by controlling the amount of fuel mixing with air during operation. Setting the jets on a Sears lawn mower will help you maintain the correct fuel-to-air mixture, improving performance and increasing the life of the carburetor.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Sears mower's engine off. Unscrew the air filter box from the side of the engine to access the carburetor. Locate the idle mixture screw on the side of the carburetor.

    • 2

Rotate the screw slowly clockwise until the needle touches the seat. Rotate the screw counterclockwise 1 1/2 turns. Refit the air filter box and start the engine, waiting 10 minutes to fine-tune the carburetor's jet settings.

    • 3

Turn the idle speed screw slowly clockwise until the engine slows down. Turn the screw counterclockwise until the engine slows down again. Adjust the idle speed screw to the midpoint of these two settings.

Fit the tachometer to the side of the engine. Turn the idle speed screw slowly clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the idle speed to the idle specifications for your Sears lawn mower. Check the owner's manual for the specs for your specific model.
