How to Keep a Miniature Greenhouse Warm at Night

A miniature greenhouse allows gardeners to start growing a small number of plants earlier than normal. You can begin planting inside a greenhouse while the dirt outside is still frozen. The plastic or glass covering a greenhouse lets the sun's rays in, trapping the heat inside. At night, the plants face the prospect of frost if they don't stay warm. Take as many precautions as necessary to keep your miniature greenhouse warm and your plants alive.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a few one-gallon jugs of water inside the greenhouse during the day so that they catch the most sunlight. The water then gives off heat during the night to keep the plants warm.

    • 2

Cover the greenhouse with a dry blanket or sheet at night to trap heat inside. Remove the blanket or sheet during the day to allow the sunlight to reheat the greenhouse.

    • 3

Lay black plastic over the greenhouse soil. Cut holes in the plastic for the plant to poke through, but leave it otherwise whole. The black absorbs heat during the day and insulates the soil at night.

Hang Christmas lights inside the greenhouse. According to the Colorado State University "CMG GardenNotes" site, Christmas lights give off 6 to 18 degrees Fahrenheit of frost protection.
