My Bolens Riding Mower Will Not Start

A Bolens riding mower operates using an internal combustion engine. To get this mower started, you need a fresh supply of gasoline and a spark to ignite it. If these elements are missing, the Bolens mower will not start at all. The operator will need to check for these crucial elements to get the mower running again.
  1. Check Fuel Supply

    • The Bolens riding mower has a large fuel tank connected to the engine. If the fuel supply drops too low, the engine will not get the supply to keep the combustion process going. Always fill the tank at least three-quarters full before trying to start the engine. When filling the tank, use only fresh gas, and don’t purchase more gas than you’ll use during a 30-day period, as the gas will go bad after this time. At the end of the season, dump any unused gas into your automobile and run the mower until it runs out of gas.

    Check Fuel Filter

    • The fuel filter, which sits at the bottom of the fuel tank, cleans all impurities from the gas before it makes it to the carburetor. However, this small screen can get clogged pretty quickly from any debris floating inside the tank. The operator will need to pull the fuel filter out regularly and clean it with a brush. The fuel filter will also need to be replaced at the beginning of every season for the mower to run at its best.

    Pull Spark Plug

    • After the fuel reaches the combustion chamber, it will need to get ignited. The spark plug connects the combustion chamber to the ignition module and fires off the necessary high-voltage charge needed to ignite the fuel. However, this spark plug will gradually lose its ability to fire off that spark, or it may get covered in heavy carbon deposits, which will restrict the voltage of the spark that gets discharged. The spark plug will also need replacing every season.

    Consulting a Professional

    • When the Bolens won’t start after performing all of the operator’s tasks and checking these crucial parts, it’s best to consult a professional. For the amateur, breaking down and repairing these sensitive systems can be difficult and time-consuming, and ultimately more expensive than taking it into a professional. Since the possibility of doing more damage than good is so great with these mowers, you’ll save money in the long run, making sure the job gets done right the first time.
