How to Build a Greenhouse on Top of a Raised Bed

Extend your local growing season by adding a greenhouse to raised garden beds. One of the benefits of using this type of greenhouse is that it is portable, meaning that you can remove it during prime growing season and not overheat your plants. A variety of materials, such as metal, glass and plastics, are used to build greenhouses. Plastic PVC tubing has the advantage of being durable and lightweight. A clear plastic film that clips for easy installation and removal covers the tube structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside dimension of the raised bed. This information is used to calculate the amount of PVC needed to make the structure. To figure the height of the greenhouse, look at the height of the tallest plant going in the greenhouse. Add 6 inches to the height of the tallest plant. This is how tall your greenhouse is going to be.

    • 2

Cut the PVC to the correct length. For instance, a 4-foot square raised bed needs eight 4-foot sections of PVC to make the top and bottom part of the frame. If the greenhouse needs to be 5 feet tall, then you need four 5-foot sections of pipe for the supports.

    • 3

Make the top and bottom greenhouse frames. Use the side outlet pipe connectors so that the outlets all face the same directions. Whether you are making the top or the bottom frame, it is easiest to have all the side outlets facing up. Press and twist the PVC pipes into the openings on the side connectors.

    • 4

Attach the uprights to the side connectors. Use one of the frames, and press and twist the upright supports onto the side connectors. Lift the other frame and place it on the uprights. Press into place. You will not be able to twist the pipe as much at this point, but there will be a little wiggle room.

    • 5

Put the greenhouse frame on the raised garden bed. Drape the frame with the plastic. The plastic needs to be 1 foot larger than the frame on all sides. Trim to fit with a utility knife or scissors. Use four clips on each side to hold the plastic in place.

Unclip a side to gain access to the interior of the greenhouse. Place bricks on the bottom frame section to hold it in place. Replace the plastic and re-clip.
