How to Make Your Own Garden Frost Guards

Gardeners who live in areas where freezes or frosts shorten the growing period may succeed in lengthening the growing season with protective equipment. Frost guards can cover fragile seeds, seedlings or vegetables to keep freezing air from damaging your garden. Make your own garden frost guards to use both in the spring and in the autumn to extend the growing season by a few weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the fiberglass hoops in your growing area so that each leg will surround a row of plants. One leg should be about six inches outside the left side of the plants, and the other leg should be about six inches outside the right side of the plants. Push one hoop into the soil about every two feet.

    • 2

Stretch the garden fabric out over the hoops so that the fabric reaches to the soil around the entire perimeter of the hoops. You will require about 4 to 6 inches of excess fabric at the soil level to secure the fabric tightly.

    • 3

Attach the fabric to the hoops using standard clothespins. Evenly space three clothespins on each hoop to secure the fabric -- one at the top and one just above the soil on each end.

Pull the fabric down to the soil. Secure the fabric along the entire perimeter of the hoops with large rocks to hold it tightly.
