How to Adjust the Throttle Cable on Murray Lawn Mowers

Some Murray lawnmower models have a throttle control cable. The cable runs from the handle of the unit down to the engine. As the throttle control handle is moved forward and backward, the taut throttle cable pulls on the engine throttle, increasing or decreasing the power. When the cable is loose, the throttle will not react properly when the handle is adjusted. Tighten the cable whenever you notice slack or when the cable is loose.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the cable adjuster at the bottom of the throttle handle. The throttle handle usually has a lever that allows you to control the speed of the mower's engine. The cable runs from the bottom of the throttle handle.

    • 2

Turn the throttle adjuster counterclockwise one turn to tighten the cable. Use pliers if you can't get a good grip.

    • 3

Turn on the unit and test the throttle cable. If the engine is "slipping," or not responding to the cable adjustment, turn off the engine.

    • 4

Turn the cable adjuster another turn counterclockwise to tighten the cable. Continue adjusting until the engine responds accordingly.
