How to Build a Wire Cover for the Garden

A wire cover for the garden can serve many purposes. It provides a cage for the plants that keeps out squirrels, rabbits and other rodents. Thin wire mesh can even keep out moths that lay damaging larvae pests. In the colder spring and fall months, you can drape the wire cover with landscaping plastic that will keep the plants and soil warm. Constructing a wire cage is simple and can be done with simple wooden garden stakes and a staple gun.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive 4-foot-tall garden stakes into the ground around each row in the garden, in pairs, with one on either side of the row. Drive them to a depth of 12 inches. Place the pairs of stakes every 3 feet.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the first stake to the last stake. Measure the width of the row.

    • 3

Cut a sheet of wire mesh with wire snippers into three strips, one for each side of the row and one for the top. The side strips should be 3 feet wide and as long as the distance between the first and last stakes. The top strip should be the same length and as wide as the width of the row.

    • 4

Use a staple gun to staple the end of the first strip to the first stake. Pull the strip straight down the row so the bottom edge touches the ground, stapling it to each stake, including the last one. Repeat with the other side strip.

    • 5

Drape the top strip over the top of the stakes and down the length of the row. Staple it to the tops of each stake.

    • 6

Cut two blocks of wire that are the same width and height as the two openings at each end of the cover. Place the blocks over the ends of the cover. Secure the two sides and the top to the cover with zip ties.
