How to Fix a Pond Pump With Low Flow

Whether your pond pump moves water to a cascading waterfall or an underwater filtration system, a pond pump with a low flow rate diminishes the integrity of your ornamental pond. Though pond pumps are designed to withstand particular matter suspended in pond water, both heavy rainfall or excessive organic matter in a pond can reduce a pond pump's flow rate. Fixing the flow rate on a pond pump is a simple process.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the location of your pond pump. Pumps that shift in the pond and move to deeper water may have a low flow rate since the distance it has to move water is increased.

    • 2

Unplug the pond pump from the power supply. It is important to turn the pump off to prevent the pump from burning out when removed from the water.

    • 3

Remove the pond pump from the water and detach the plumbing connections.

    • 4

Place the pond pump back in the water and plug the pump back on to ensure that the low flow rate problem is with the pond pump and not the plumbing. If the pump produces a strong jet of water, look to the plumping for clogs or obstructions to fix the problem.

Check the intake for signs of organic matter that can clog the pump. Remove any leaves, algae and silt that you find around the intake. Often, loose debris in pond water clogs the intake of pond pumps, which reduces the flow rate.
