DIY Side Unloading Auger

Farmers use augers to move grain from out of storage carts and combines as they unload the harvested grains into trucks or silos. These augers use hydraulics in a gear box that is operated using the tractor's engine power. You can install an auger into the side of your storage cart or combine.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the side on which you want the side unloading auger. Cut out a square opening from the storage cart, about two inches from the top along the side's center, using the circular saw and the metal cutting blade.

    • 2

Drill holes into the bottom of the storage cart to mount the gear box and lead the hydraulic lines through to connect to the tractor. Thread the hydraulic lines through the bottom.

    • 3

Set the gear box inside and secure it to the storage cart with bolts. Place nuts on the bolts and tighten with the adjustable wrench. Remove the end cap and bearing bolts from the auger with the adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Place the flighting onto the auger tube, leaving 1/2 inch of space from the bearing flange and an overlap with the auger flighting. Weld the flighting into place.

    • 5

Slide the auger extension through the hole made on the side of the storage cart. Match the holes in the extension with the holes in the flighting. Thread the bolts through the holes, and secure with the washers and nuts.

    • 6

Slide the bearing and locking collar onto the auger shaft. Secure the collar with the bearing flanges, lock nuts and carriage bolts. Place the spout on the end of the extension tube so it faces down and overlaps by 1 1/4 inches.

    • 7

Push the marker tip through the carriage-bolt hole on the extension tube to place a dot on the spout. Remove the spout and drill a hole through the metal at the dot mark. Slide the spout onto the extension tube. Secure the spout, using the carriage bolt and the self tapping screws with washers.
